REQUEST: Building Guide

Postby Walloping » Fri Mar 30, 2012 2:05 am

I am requesting an extremely comprehensive guide on construction in AoS in all it's glory and many intricacies.
Similar too "Tai's War Academy" but more oriented toward building designs, tips, and strategies.
Thanks in advance,

2-block walls are your best friend. Great forts are useless shit unless in PinPoint.

An Introduction To Building
One of the greatest aspects of AOS that give it it's tactical strategy is the aspect of construction and destruction. AOS follows a relatively simple concept that is easy to lear, but hard to master.

Basic Controls: To begin first, first select the block icon in-game.
Left-Click: Your primary build function. This is the most basic option, placing one block in the location you point your cursor to. The possible block locations will be outlined.
Right-Click: Click and Drag Building- In this type of building, the player is able to drag his blocks in a line, as shown in this picture below. The path is outlined in-game. Very useful for setting down the foundations of a base of bunker.
E Key: Your block becomes the color of the block you click on. Very useful when trying to make hidden camping spots.
Arrow Keys: On the bottom right, you will see a color palette. The arrow keys control your position on the palette.
The Spade: This is a tool that destroys blocks. Hold left click to hit a block. Hitting a block 2 times will destroys it, giving you one block to use. Right clicking gives you no blocks and has a longer reload time, but eliminates the three blocks in front of you. Very useful in building tunnels.
In combat, the spade is a melee attack dealing about 30 points of damage. Not always useful but it gets the job done very quickly. Some servers like Zombies and Arena only allow the use of a spade to attack.

Structures:
Building a 3 block wall just does not cover it in AOS. Nor does building enormous pixel art. In AOS, your designs need to be flexible, efficent and easy to use.

The Battlefield:
- Efficiency is the key here. If you are playing on something deeper than two blocks, your key defense will be trenches and low walls.

Is this what you wanted? I'll still be updating this and adding pics.

That's closer too what i was looking for :-) but more focused on the structures aspect, like tower designs or trench digging methods or Bunker designs

I've got a great tower design for the babel servers- its fast to build and darn near indestructible.

Image
you don't just build stairs, you build a big structure. rather than waste alot of time building a solid structure, you build a quick frame. you put the stairs inside. the structure is very blocky- the design is based on the empire state building's structural steel frame. it's very strong and difficult to destroy due to its sheer size and number of beams that require to be destroyed. Early builds was just a staircase with a few extra legs on it.

Like this:
Image
some inept teammates screwed up my stairs real bad, so I had to double back a little and built a new stair above the old one. and they screwed it up again... *sigh* ....idiots.

may latest variant of this design requires you build the frame first, then the stairs. the stairs is fully enclosed by the frame, so long as no one's a griefer it is quite unlikely the enemy can break it.

some downsides:
the fairly open structure has zero ballistic protection.
it still requires alot of blocks. build it near the command post if possible.
if you don't give it floors you'll often find yourself falling to death.
it's not the prettiest thing around... well if you felt like it you can give it a pretty facade, just like the empire state building.

some design considerations:
the structure will be at least 60 blocks long, make sure you have the space
make sure there's no inept players on your side, they can seriously ruin the build
its very resistant to enemy attack, however is not indestructible.
the more "legs" you give it the better.
