For a long time, pyspades was a third-party project developed by reverse-engineering the protocol, but this changed after I joined the team. Now it uses some of the original code to make it fully compatible. Right now, the vanilla server serves as a reference implementation so we can be positive that scripts and whatnot aren't going to interfere, however, we are slowly deprecating it for pyspades, e.g. the OpenGL client won't use the vanilla server, but a pyspades branch instead.
