A lesson in perspective...

For all things AoS!

A lesson in perspective...

Postby Tai » Fri Jul 13, 2012 6:43 am

From the front page;
What the deuce - almost at 2 million downloads!... and hitting over 100,000 views a day and peak player counts since launch :O

Sure, it sounds like a good stat, but you're neglecting to realize more and more of those players are griefers, BRs who refuse to speak English, kids who would rather be playing Minecraft, and COD kiddies who are destroying this game.

Is anyone else a little bit peeved that Ben is pretending everything is fine? I haven't played a *good* game of AoS in... hell, since Goonhaven shut down.

This always happens to small-time producers/artists/musicians/inventors when they start seeing the dollar signs...

QFT. Even Notch departed from his original vision of Minecraft as an awesome sandbox to an Achievement-Unlock filled wasteland of a game (And you know all of those updates were to appease the 12 year old's on their Xboxs who wouldn't be able to survive in the Alpha/Beta modes all alone without any interactive components). Even so, Minecraft at least retained it's core functionality. Ben has just bastardized this game beyond recognition*, and it only seems like it will be getting worse.

* - okay, okay, the BRs, Polaks, and 12 year olds did their part too.

True, True.

I can frankly say that I haven't felt fun while playing this game in a very long time. The last time was when I was having a match, and that joy was marred by the arse kicking I got. I stopped playing this game, forums and all for two weeks, hoping that things would change. Things changed, some for the better, but the gaming community, for the most part, still stunk.

Does anyone know why GoonHaven shut down?

If you do a search you will find out why, it is quite the story Varun:) I also find that more and more I leave a game quickly because no matter the skill of you are your opponents, it is hard to find a server without the BRs, griefers, and hack users. Except for Minit Whitelist and many of the private servers, of course that does eliminate the vast majority of all else.

It was quite a story. Quite a story indeed. A lot of interesting stuff in there, and more than a few ranting.

If only our (I don't think you guys know them, though) friends over at Lethal Zone could set up a server or two... (or at least bother to let the clan exist in AoS)...

Probably doesn't matter, since BRs/Polaks/12-years-old CoDkids (only those Polaks who actually don't speak English - given I'm Polish you can't call me a Polak in AoS-sense-of-the-word, can you?) would still visit it and annoy the real sh!t out of everyone...

tbh, i missed that unique feeling where I, or my team were digging tunnels which could take up alot of time, just to get the intel. (Back in 0.3x, I was in an actual squad that was going a seperate route for the intel, not the join /squad codeverythingelseis[overused adjective] things so you can be 2 blocks ahead than the rest of your team. And spawn there later, only to get headshot'd from behind.
AoS is pretty much how ED describes it.

@OP

You are presenting us with an incredibly warped and bias interpretation of events, please. Allow me to elaborate.

Tai wrote:Sure, it sounds like a good stat, but you're neglecting to realize more and more of those players are griefers, BRs who refuse to speak English, kids who would rather be playing Minecraft, and COD kiddies who are destroying this game.

I have been playing AoS since .3 and I can truthfully and honestly say the ratio of "griefers etc" has only increased marginally, yes. ill admit it appears there are more, and do you know why? because the player base is increasing at what's called a geometric rate. As the player base increases the number of griefers etc increases along with it, the ratio of these annoying players to decent players has changed minimally.

Tai wrote:Is anyone else a little bit peeved that Ben is pretending everything is fine? I haven't played a *good* game of AoS in... hell, since Goonhaven shut down.

I take issue with pretty much everything you have said in the above statement, and I will explain why.

- Ben is fully aware of the griefer etc problem, and he is under no illusions about it. But it is NOT something easily rectified

- You bring GoonHaven into the equation? I played GH nearly everyday, the amount of griefers and BS was exactly the same as everywhere else, the admins were just as active and inactive. Now when it got shut down, things got messy and dramatic, you are not helping this by making such claims as above.

Tai wrote:Ben has just bastardized this game beyond recognition*, and it only seems like it will be getting worse.

Okay, now you've got a damned cheek posting something like that. Remember,

- YOU play this game
- Ben owes you NOTHING

The game has evolved, it has changed. Just because it is different from .26 does not mean it has as you so rudely put "bastardized". Yeh you may well have enjoyed the older versions more then the new, you know that means? time to go find a different game that you enjoy, just because this one has changed so it is not to your taste does not mean it has been ruined by it's dev.

I looked at this game the first time I played it, I saw so much potential. I STILL see that potential. Ben is taking the game places, he's giving more depth, more intricacy. It was not going to stay so dead simple and repetitive as .26 forever.

I think you're reading a bit too deeply into the GH thing, he's just pointing out that it's been some while since he's played a good game

There is plenty more I have to say, but I can see this thread going downhill pretty fast, so I will take my leave.

Erm, how is he acting entitled? He's just voicing his opinion on the game, he never said Ben owes it to him to make the game more towards his liking.

tl;dr this whole thread is full of over-and-under-evaluated reactionary statements

@ReubenMchawk

I disagree, to me the OP is fairly obviously annoyed at ben now that the game is not to his taste, and i'll show what makes me think that.

"Ben has just bastardized this game beyond recognition*, and it only seems like it will be getting worse."

The statement "beyond recognition" < meaning the OP thinks the game is totally different to what he used to play and doesn't like it anymore because of such. It is no longer /to his taste/ he wrote this thread complaining because is not /to his taste/ anymore. Also "only seems like it will be getting worse" implying the OP thinks ben is drawing the game away from what the OP originally liked.

Maybe poor wording in the OP's part, maybe over-interpretation of mine.

Meh.

Well yeah, he doesn't like it, but I just see it as more of him venting rather than him demanding anything from Ben.

Most likely. Though I would wonder why he made the thread if he was not attempting to achieve something. Like you say though, probably just a blog post.

I agree. I've been here since .21, but it wasn't griefers or the lack of GH that made things this way... We've just gone in an awful direction since the shotgun.

Eh, Polaks I have less of a problem with, I just generalize so I don't have to do the whole PC "well, of course not all polaks are like such and such" crap.

In my experience, any Polak who has learned even rudimentary English is a legitimate player. It's just the other 98% who aren't.
