Except from all the time he's dedicated over the course of the last year or so to make it. That warm fuzzy feeling you get from a job well done only gets you so far.
I think instead of jumping straight into the pay-to-play model, they could try a donation model similar to over at Bay12 with Dwarf Fortress. If that doesn't work out, then they can always try other methods of monetising the game, like adverts and pay-to-play.
The thing with pay-to-play is that the game would lose a lot of the fanbase because the average age must be around 12 or so. However, it would also lead to a lot of the undesirables (griefers, trolls and 'hackers' - I use that term loosely because they're just script kiddies really) moving on, which can only benefit the game.
