Tired of trying to kill enemies with insignifiant toys called grenades who never kill anyone in your hands, while other players play Spades Invaders with them ? Tired of this situation ?

This thread will help you training with grenades, making them as effective in your hands as they should be.

I-What are grenades / basic commands (for Deuces)
Grenades are little bombs that you can select with the key [4] or scrolling the mouse. You start with 3 grenades and can replenish them at a Command Post or, in pyspades servers, if you have an airstrike.
Pressing the Left Mouse Button (LMB) unpins the grenade, releasing LMB launches the grenade. Grenades explode 3 seconds after being unpinned, so be careful if you use them. Contrary to other weapons, you can be killed by your own grenades.
Grenades are affected by gravity and have a range of a few decades meters, because of the gravity. They also move slow compared to bullets. When they explode, they make damage over a radius or around 10 blocks. The closer the grenade explodes from an enemy, the more damage he takes. Grenades exploding close enough will instant kill him.
If several enemies are in the grenade's radius, they will all be damaged. A well-placed grenade can kill several enemies, with a bit of luck it can terminate a full squad

Grenades make neglibible damage when exploding in water. To kill a player in water with a grenade, throw it on the shore just next to him if he is a few blocks away from the shore, or make the grenade explode mid-air (shrapnel, VI) over him. If your grenade falls into water, you just wasted your grenade

They also make a 3x3x1 hole on the ground but their anti-material potential is weak compared to your primary weapon and your spade.
Also, note that grenades will only make damage if there is a clear way between your target and your grenade. A well-placed block can fully protect an enemy player.
II-Re-pin a grenade
If by mistake you unpinned your grenade but DID NOT DROP IT YET, you can repin it to keep it in store. There are 2 ways of repinning a grenade :
1-Sprint
2-Select another weapon/scroll the mouse
(note : these commands DO NOT WORK with real-life grenades, don't try it with you grandfather's war box if he has one)
III-Use grenades as a distraction
When most players throw grenades, then charge exactly from where they thrown their grenades. At first sight, it looks useful as you'll just have to finish enemies who weren't killed by grenades. But survivors know where grenades came from, and know where you'll come from. You just lost the advantage of surprise
Using grenades to clean a room or a bunker is nice, but come from another door than your grenades. Enemies will expect you to come from the same direction as your grenades
Also, you can throw a grenade away, just to make a distraction to enemies.
IV-Rebound on wall
Thrown grenades can rebound on walls. This can make them very dangerous to yourself, mostly if you want to throw them from cover in a laggy server, but may also be used as a sneaky tactic to kill campers
Just like a tennis ball would do, throw your grenade on a wall to see it rebound. You can hit enemies who are not in your sight

V-Extended range/height
Your grenade will have its maximum range if thrown 45 degrees to the sky.
With a good timing, you can throw your grenade when jumping. Your grenade will traver higher and reach further areas. For a bigger effect, throw it when jumping forward, adding horizontal speed to your grenade.
Of course, you can also use jump-throwing to reach higher areas, such as the top of a tower.
Cocking your grenade DOES NOT increase its throwing range.

VI-Use and abuse of grenade timing
Grenades explode 3 seconds after being unpinned, unless you repin them. This timer starts when you PRESS LMB and NOT WHEN YOU RELEASE LMB. Holding LMB will make the grenade explode faster after releasing LMB
Several tactics result in this possibility :
1-Kamikaze : the most deucy tactic ever, a suicide for your kill ratio but really fun when you succeed it : hold your grenade until its explosion, while runing to an enemy. You'll die in the process (from your grenade, or shot first) and if you come close enough from your enemy, the grenade will kill him. If you are shot, you'll drop the grenade who will explode after its timer is over, but your chances of killing anyone are negligible
2-Shrapnel : just like World War I's shrapnels, make your grenade explode in air. You need intensive timing training to succeed it, but it's payful. First, your enemies will not have the time to react, while they simply could have run away if the grenade had 1 ou 2 seconds left before explosion. Moreover, making the grenade explode in air and not on the ground will assure anyone within its radius will take damage, ignoring low protections and most terrain. You can throw it at close range 2 seconds after having unpin you grenade, or (more difficult) try making a long shot, exploding mid-air. Cocking the grenade while in cover, and poping out of cover just to throw the grenade, is an useful tactic as you are completely defenseless when holding your grenade. Shrapnels are deadly to quickly get rid of enemies behind a small wall or in a small room. They are also useful to kill players camping on the top of a buinding, just throw the grenade vertically and make it explode at their height

VII-Smart grenade modding :
Learning how to throw grenades is fine, having a little help is better. I advise you 2 little modifications to improve your grenade efficicency :
1-Use a bright-colored grenade. It makes it easier to see, making enemy grenades easier to see
2-To improve your kamikaze/shrapnels, change the pin.wav by a modified file of a 3-seconds timer bip bip bip. Although it isn't reliable in the battlefield as your bip bip will stop if anyone unpins a grenade, it will help you to train your timing. Here is the file I currently use :

VIII-Nullify an enemy grenade (tip from fds)
If an enemy grenade lands just next to you, and you don't have a lot of room to escape, bury it under several blocks, then run as far as you can from the grenade. Blocks will be destroyed by the explosion and will absorb all or as least most damage, preventing the grenade from killing you.

I hope it was useful to you, have fun really using grenades now :)
