Great idea for a thread here.
I can't remember many interesting things from my first time playing, so I'll just summarize my experience of playing the game back when I began. On the first day, I can remember the white webpage with the server list, and after waiting quite a while to get into a server that was almost empty, I began. First came the fatal decision of choosing a team. Usually, I would go with green for everything as it has always been my favourite colour, but I thought I should try switching that up for once, so I joined blue, and that has been my favourable team choice ever since. Of course, I was a Deuce. So, I spawned in the back lines and I don't remember going any farther. I started with figuring out the controls (nobody reads the 'readme'!) and built a base in the spawn which started off as an underground room. I didn't spend a long time doing this as I wanted to see what else there was to do, so I headed off to try finding an enemy base, unfortunately I bumped into the invisible wall, heh, I realised this and headed the other way. I hadn't been traveling for long when I was being fired at, I saw the guy on a hill to the left but I didn't get a chance to fire, this was my first death. I played around at the spawn for a while and then left because I needed to get some sleep that night. As I said, nothing too interesting happened that day, although playing the game for the first time was fun, I really liked the concept. As for the server name, I'm fairly sure that it was the Mojang Community server, which doesn't exist anymore of course.
After that day, I would go on some of the other random servers, with great difficulty of course. I would most frequently go on the 'Trench Wars EU' and 'Trench Wars EU 2' servers though. In my opinion, these were the best days of Ace of Spades, the only map was the default map, the only gun was the rifle and it was completely accurate. There was no auto-climb and there were always huge fortresses with teamwork. I remember having to dig tunnels through hills and build bridges to save time for our team to get to the front lines. I also remember the big challenge in the sneaking around through tunnels to get the intel without being found. The fortresses that the greens would produce were always impressive and really helped their team. Their teamwork in this was also quite admirable. Another thing I recall doing was making a base inside of a mountain right back next to the green spawn, a person saw me eventually though, and I had a long fight trying to reclaim the base. Before this, I hadn't really played any FPS to a competitive extent, but I seemed to be fairly good at the game after a while, I wasn't really able to find someone who could top me, although I did find one player who was pretty much at my level, this was most certainly the strongest green team I had seen at the time, I think I was able to stop them from coming too far into our base though. I enjoyed playing a lot and got my first substantial kill number,
306, this isn't much of an accomplishment nowadays, but back then it was pretty big. All of this happened on the Trench Wars EU servers.
Later I found the 'Sham's Little Pony' server, I found the name amusing so I decided to join. I think this was the time when the Trench Wars servers weren't being hosted anymore, I can't remember exactly though. Fun was definitely to be had here, the regulars on the server were challenging and the teamwork was of a good standard as far as I can recall. I had also made some good acquaintances here, so this was the server I frequented from then on.
So, that concludes my first experiences back when I began to play this game, this was all in the April/May time frame. I have to say, I enjoyed playing more back then than I do now.
