Jagged Alliance 2. It's like $6 on gog.com and you can run it with a toaster, though the developing studio died years ago and won't be seeing any of the money you put towards a purchase.
The first is also really good and worth a look, though 2's expansion is mediocre and the sequel[s?] was/were absolute garbage.
Once you've beaten vanilla a few times, look into the [unofficial] Update/mod 1.13 either
Here for the newest stable version or
Here for newest installer version.However, a couple things about the latter;
Don't attach the magic ACME trigger to the FN FAL, the game doesn't like the idea of that weapon having 3 round burst fire and crashes.
Beware having too many mercs with you at the beginning. Occasionally some of them will get stuck permanently when you go underground to meet Miguel. 4 or 5 maximum should be fine.
Zombies [new to this version] were accidentally disabled/coders forgot to enable them for this version, you'll have to get the newest version of the mod off the SVN if you want their presence in sci fi mode. Instructions on how to do that can be found
Here Though, it's somewhere between 2 and 12 hours to download.
You can find a list of ingame hotkeys
Here and a collection of various tutorials
HereWhen you're playing around with the JA2options.ini I suggest using
Notepad++ to edit instead of the supplied ini editor, it works better when dealing with any version newer than the 4870 or whatever stable version. Pretty much everything new is optional either through the ini or ingame options. Even if you prefer vanilla, I suggest picking up 1.13 for the addition of "Silent skyrider" to the options. It makes him far less irritating in that he won't talk anymore.
Oh, when playing 1.13 for the first time I suggest turning the Drassen counterattack off. Unless you enjoy the thought of getting attacked from three sides by upwards of 80 redshirts and 20 blackshirts in Drassen mine. Though, personally it's my favorite part of the game. You can find tips for handling the attack
Here And hereOne more thing I almost forgot: In 1.13 with the full auto only MGs - That would mean pretty much all of them but the RPK - you aim the burst with mousewheel and increase the size with alt+mousewheel or right clicking. If you're on a laptop/netbook and don't have a mouse wheel you can get around this by opening the supplied XML editor, pressing alt+g, scrolling over to where it says "Class" and clicking the word twice to invert the list, scroll down past monster/shotguns to the MGs, double-click the weapon's image, click the "Weapon" tab then the "Guns" tab underneath, Uncheck "Full auto only".
Now, when you're in game you can aim in singleshot mode with standard right click, press B to change to full auto and increase burst size the same way. Or, just attach a mouse. Whatever works for you.
Happy hunting!
