Unicorns originated from European folklore and were first mentioned by the Ancient Greeks. They became extremely important during the Renaissance and Middle Ages, often being used in heraldry as a symbol of strength and freedom. No 5 year old made that up. >:O

Also, I'd like to point out that even if an animal is fictitious, it's still definitely considered an animal.
