How Do I Use IRC?

Yes, it is a silly question, but I just can't figure it out. I press on the IRC link here on the forums, which takes me to the login window of IRC. I wright in my nickname (bov930527) and press "Join Chat". Everything is right, because it takes me to the right window where I can see people chat. But in that window I can't do anything. There is no box where I can print my messages, nothing happens no matter what button I push on my keaybord. I can't press anywhere, except to smash myself with a fihbot and to change from "#AoS" to "Status". So, anyone care to help? How do I use IRC to get messages out?
