Those weird little boxes

I was just wondering...what is up with the boxes on the left of each thread? I thought they signified new posts/no new posts or something like that but I can't figure it out :(

The only thing I know is if that the one on the left has a star,you posted on that topic,if it is yellow,there is a new post.
